Lee is enthusiastic. Lee is youthful. Lee is exuberant and vibrant and loud and kind and patient and dedicated and hardworking. In other words, he is the kind of guy who could kick anyone’s ass while being incredibly sorry doing it; the kind of guy who advocates youth and hard work; the kind of guy who could think no wrong from a single soul, until they do something and prove it; the kind of guy who strives to better himself while making sure that the world knows exactly what he intends to do. He’s the guy every girl’s parents would like to see their daughter bring home and the guy every young boy wants to be.

I N T H E B O O K S

Tokyo, Japan was the large, overcrowded city Lee first called home. He was born in the local neighborhood hospital to two loving parents who raised him on good morals, youth, and the belief that hard work pays off. He spent a few years there, growing up as every Japanese boy would, until his father came home with the big news that he’d been offered a higher position in the new New York City branch of the company he worked for.

At four, Lee went from being a Tokyoite to a New Yorker in the span of thirteen hours.

Luckily enough, Lee was the kind of boy that was hardly ever set back by anything, whether it was his inability to adjust to the new language (Ls were as foreign to him as the Philly cheese stake pizzas he started buying every single day after school in sixth grade) or the fact that he didn’t look like anyone in the packed apartment building his father had found on short notice. He took these setbacks and blossomed, like a lotus flower in spring.

Though his family had originally moved to an overcrowded apartment building somewhere in Inwood, Manhattan, they moved out almost six months later into a beautiful, three story apartment building in Elmhurst, Queens. He attended one of the many public elementary schools there while starting karate lessons his parents felt would keep him from forgetting his roots, then one of the two public junior highs before submitting to fate and going to his zone school, Newtown High. Nothing major ever happened, except that one time he was fifteen and injured his left leg and arm by trying a very dangerous stunt. Somehow, he managed to recover soon afterwards and didn’t keep the incident from letting him make it to third degree black belt.

After graduating high school, he decided against college, much to his parents’ dismay (“You must attend university, as it is a way to better yourself!”). He, however, had other plans, where university wasn’t included. Opening up a new karate school in Upper Manhattan and taking quite a few (almost all) of the kids he taught at the same karate place he’d gone from 10th Kyu to Third Dan, it has been the place where Rock Lee has been ever since he was eighteen, gaining recognition in competitions while teaching his students the way of the empty hand and youth.
